Athletic Program

Sem crew team

Athletic activities are a significant part of Sem's program with the belief that sound bodies best support sound minds. As a member of the Monsignor Martin Girls Athletic League, Sem provides the opportunity to participate in varsity and junior varsity interscholastic sports.

Buffalo Seminary’s Athletic Philosophy is an outgrowth of our school’s mission. The program emphasizes excellence, commitment, participation and the cultivation of the whole person.  A Buffalo Seminary athlete will grow as an individual while learning the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility and dedication.  Buffalo Seminary’s athletic department seeks to provide each student with a sense of belonging while encouraging each athlete to achieve her personal best. Every Buffalo Seminary athlete should be proud of her athletic experience and take forward many positive memories and lasting friendships.

Buffalo Seminary athletes are involved in team practices approximately 10 hours a week. During the season team members are exempt from PE classes.  Coaches use practice time to allow all athletes to develop skills and game strategies.  Game participation is the reward for accomplishment made and the effort given during practice.  Competitive games are scheduled in order to provide experience for the participants.  Participation requirements vary according to level.  Of primary importance at all levels in determining participation are ability, attitude, coachability, commitment, effort, fitness, and knowledge of fundamentals.  A student must be in school by 12 noon in order to participate in an interscholastic game for that day.

JUNIOR VARSITY: (when applicable)

Skill development, participation and training athletes for the Varsity level are the primary objectives of Junior Varsity Sports.

VARSITY:

Varsity athletics encourage the fulfillment of the goals of the athletic program, but recognize the importance of the competitive excellence at the Varsity level.

LEAGUE:

Buffalo Seminary participates in the Monsignor Martin League except for crew, squash, and field hockey.  The Monsignor Martin League teams include, Mount St. Mary’s, Nardin, Holy Angels, Niagara Catholic, Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s (Lancaster), Mt. Mercy, O’Hara, Nichols, Immaculata and Park.
