Event Recap: The Red-Tailed Hawks started out their home campaign Wednesday hosting St. Mary's of Lancaster in a showdown of two very good teams. Nervousness got the best of Buffalo Seminary right at the beginning of the game, with St. Mary's scoring 3 goals at will in just the first few minutes. After that point, the ladies brought themselves together and began shutting down the Lancers on every opportunity. Once the tides had turned, Buffalo Seminary sought to get themselves on the board. Half way through the first half Sophomore Sarah Obletz netted her fifth goal of the young season after several great passing plays. At the end of the first half the score was 3-1 in favor of St. Mary's.
The second half saw more of the teamwork of the Red-Tailed Hawks produce results, as a shift in positions caused Sophomore Maddy Thompson find the goal for the first time this season on a nice chip shot for 25 yards out. With momentum on their side it was not long before Buffalo Seminary had tied the game on a superb second effort on the part of Obletz. Her first shot was saved by St. Mary's goalie, only to have the rebound come back to her and her patience allowed her to finish the rebound, tying the game at 3-3. Following that goal Buffalo Seminary had 5 or 6 great opportunities to take the lead, only to be foiled by both St. Mary's goalie and the goal itself. With less than 3 minutes left in the game, St. Mary's broke through the Buffalo Seminary defense and had a great shot stopped on one of the best diving saves by Sophomore Natalie Voos of the season. Unfortunately St. Mary's was able to capitalize on the rebound and took the lead back to stay, with the final score being 4-3.
While it was the team's first loss, it showed that with the Buffalo Seminary perseverance, we can never be counted out of a game. Buffalo Seminary will look to avenge this loss when they travel to meet St. Mary's on October 4th. With younger players gaining more experience with each passing day, St. Mary's Senior and Junior starting players better be ready for the talented youth of the Red-Tailed Hawks.
