Academics

SEM’s academic program is

unique, innovative, and rigorous.

Throughout the four years at SEM, students are expected to develop core competencies in all five of the major disciplines, ensuring a solid foundation in the humanities, the sciences, and the arts. SEM students are encouraged to pursue Honors and Advanced Placement courses in areas of particular strength. Advanced electives during junior and senior years cover a range of topics, and opportunities for independent study can be arranged for self-motivated scholars.

Each student’s academic journey culminates in a senior year capstone project which demonstrates the critical thinking, creativity, and research skills that are developed throughout the program and motivates students to pursue a topic that is meaningful to them. SEM graduates tackle the most demanding college and university requirements, pursue a variety of careers, and meet challenges with confidence. Whether they graduated five years ago or fifty, our alumnae report that their experience at SEM helped them be better prepared for college than their peers.

The dynamic and knowledgeable faculty will always be the cornerstone of a superior education at SEM. Our small and selective nature allows faculty to mentor students and personally commit to a girl’s success. SEM's Harkness tables and seminar-style discussions ensure that every voice is expressed and heard and that students learn about and practice perspective and civil discourse.

At SEM we learn from each other. Cell phone use is prohibited during the school day, a leading-edge decision by SEM’s administration in response to findings related to individual and community health among teens today. The social-emotional learning environment is prioritized in every decision SEM’s leadership makes, and the result is a connected, present student body and community.
