2020 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

CRAFTS

BEADS GALORE: Design and create bracelets and earrings that add sparkle to your life!

CALLIGRAPHY: Learn the art of writing the italic alphabet with illumination to write your favorite quotes.

DRAGONWORLD: Design your own dragon using your choice of techniques materials, including polymer clay, 3D sewing or paper mache.

FIBER ARTS: Learn basic sewing techniques to make your own stuffed animal, doll or puppet.

IT'S A SMALL WORLD: Using polymer clay and balsa wood, design your own miniature objects that can stand alone or be a part of a miniature world or scene.

KNITTING: From the basics to intermediate techniques, learn knitting at your own pace and complete a knitted object in the process.

SCRAPBOOKING: Save your photos, letters, artwork and other memories in one place where you can revisit each moment again and again.

TIE-DYE/CRAFTS/PAINTING: Learn how to tie-dye everything from T-Shirts to cupcakes and then how to weave boondoggles and friendship bracelets.


LEARNING ADVENTURES 

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: Learn the signing alphabet and loads of vocabulary so you can have another language in your life and communicate in a brand new way with more people!

CREATIVE CHEMISTRY: Learn the science behind it all! Create slime, grow crystals, make edible chocolate play dough, and see what happens when you combine simple cooking ingredients from your kitchen. How does it work? Come find out!

DOLPHIN TANK: Have you ever thought of an invention that you wish someone would make or have you thought of a solution to an everyday problem? Then, sign up for The Dolphin Tank! You and your classmates will form a company, think of an invention or solution to a problem, and present to our panel of expert “Dolphins.” The winning team each week gets a special Summer@SEM surprise!

FOOD FUN WITH FRIENDS: Whip up some fun in the kitchen! Put your cooking and baking skills to good use, and come learn some great recipes to share with your friends and family!

GIRL UNLIMITED: What does it mean to be completely yourself, even when it’s hard? What are some things we can do to make that process a little easier? In this class, we invite you to be yourself, every last bit!  We will be discussing important topics, such as self-esteem, empathy, mindfulness, and friendship. Every day, we will make a craft that will help us understand these different topics, and will do ice breakers, play games, and discuss how these ideas relate to our everyday lives. I can't wait to see you there!

INTRO TO AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLS: A one-week English immersion program designed to help international students acclimate to American schools. Topics covered will include academic expectations, interacting with others in an American classroom, healthy habits for school, opportunities beyond the classroom, and an introduction to American culture. Special focus can be placed on attending Buffalo Seminary if the participating students will all be attending SEM in the fall.

INTRO TO HIGH SCHOOL: A week-long program designed to introduce middle school students to the experiences of early high school. In this program, students will engage in project-based learning to investigate the challenges of transitioning into high school, identifying healthy behaviors for success, plan for potential pitfalls, and read materials about the high school experience.

SUPERHEROES OF THE FUTURE - GIRL CODERS: There are numerous opportunities to learn coding. Which is right for my child? Which will capture her attention? Which will she be successful at? SEM has a strong computer science program. Let us help inspire and guide her. Girls who code are the superheroes of the future! Perfect for all ages and all levels of coding experience. Through guided independent work, each child will take a different path based on her age and interest. If your daughter is coming for multiple weeks, she can take this again and always learn something new.

FITNESS & SPORTS

LEARN TO ROW (for 11 years and older): Summer@SEM offers rowing in cooperation with the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association. Participants will learn about water and boat safety, and how to use the equipment. Build skills, commitment, and learn what it means to be on a team! No experience necessary for this 1/2 day program. 

SAIL AWAY WITH SEM! (for girls entering grades 5-9): Summer@SEM offers sailing in cooperation with the Buffalo Yacht Club. Build confidence and leadership skills while having fun in the sun! No experience required for this 1/2 day program .

LEARN TO GOLF: This class is designed for golfers of all levels. Never picked up a club?  No problem. Want work on your short game? No problem. Learn strength and flexibility to increase your distance and finish the week with a round at a local course.

SEM SPORTS: Be a Buffalo Seminary Red-Tailed Hawk for the summer! Sports include basketball, soccer, and squash! Everyone has a chance to play and be excellent!

FINE ARTS

EXTREME ROOM MAKEOVER SEWING CAMP: Are you ready for an extreme bedroom makeover? Or just need to give it a few updates? In just one week, this camp will transform your room into your creation. From creating an inspiration board with all your favorite colors and designs to selecting fabric for your projects, this unique experience will be entirely yours. No sewing experience necessary! Field Trip included to Joann Fabrics to source and shop for fabric. No sewing skills or previous textile experience required. Additional Fee for Fabrics and Trims: $15 per student Fashion Lab New York (FLNY) will purchase all fabric, trims, thread machines and additional supplies prior to class start.  **Extra: Campers must bring in a XL white T-Shirt.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: Do you dream of becoming the next Sofia Coppola or Ava Duvernay? Learn to use iMovie in our Mac Lab to create, film, and edit your own short movies. (2-week course)

MAKE-UP & UP-DOS: Whether you’re attending a ball, modeling a new look, or acting on stage, makeup and hairstyle can play a huge part! Come learn different hair and makeup techniques, and discover how you can transform from one character to another with some creativity and fun!

PAINTER’S PALETTE: Allow your creative mind and spirit to come alive on canvas! If you can dream it, you can paint it! 

READY, SET, DRAW: Calling all doodlers, drawers, sketchers, and learners: come check out this class! We will be learning the basics of drawing, in whatever style you want. That means you can draw how YOU want to draw - realistic, cartoony, bubbly, spiky, anime, dotty, you name it! We will try out all sorts of drawing materials, including charcoal, colored pencils, pens, and markers, and in nice weather, we will go outside one day to draw with chalk. Can’t wait to see you in class!

THEATRE MAGIC: Have you ever wanted to write and star in your very own play? Do you write scripts and movies in your spare time, just for fun? Are you interested in theatre, and want to see if it’s for you? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then I invite you to try this class! Every week is different, because every week, we will work together as a group to write, block, and perform a show of our own creation. Campers will perform their show for the whole camp on Fridays after lunch. Come and play with us!

THE VOICE: The sound of Summer@SEM is singing. Join in! Like to sing? Want to practice? Eager to learn a new skill? Campers will explore acapella techniques and sing their favorite songs together! We can’t wait to hear your rockin’ rendition in Summer@SEM’s version of The Voice!

UPCYCLED COUTURE FASHION CAMP: Are you interested in recycling and reusing? This FASHION LAB NY (FLNY) Camp will encourage children to think outside of the box. Design your very own clothing and accessories using treasures that others might call trash. In this camp, we take creative action to reduce our carbon footprint by exploring ways of restyling, reusing or upcycling found fashion. Simple techniques explored include hand and machine sewing, surface embellishment, embroidery and textile design techniques such as basic block/stamp printing and fabric painting. Field Trip included to Goodwill to source and shop for pre-owned garments, or you can bring your own treasures to camp! No sewing skills or previous textile experience required. Additional Fee for Fabrics and Trims:$ 15/student FLNY will purchase prior to class: Fabric, Trims, Thread Machines and additional supplies provided by FLNY.
